Panel Session on Industrial Electronics Applications to Renewable Energies

On June 6, 2007, a panel session entitled "Industrial Electronics Applications to Renewable Energies" was held in Vigo, Spain, as part of ISIE 2007. The panel session had close to 50 attendees and the main item on the agenda was to discuss the appropriateness of creating a new committee with focus on the industrial electronics applications to renewable energies. The panel session was chaired by Marco Liserre. After a short introduction by Marco, Lars Helle from Vestas Wind Systems A/S, Denmark, and Francisco Marquez from Greenpower, Spain, introduced the visions of the companies they were representing and expressed their desire to work with the academia to promote renewable energy initiative provided appropriate mechanisms could be identified. The floor was then given to 10 renewable energy researchers from 10 different academic institutions worldwide to present a summary of their activities in renewable energy. Following the presentations, the attendees were asked to share their views about the possible launch of the new committee. The attendees unanimously agreed on the fact that the creation of the new committee was a very good idea, but the mission, structure, domain of responsibilities, and types of activities such as annual workshops had to be clearly specified. It was stressed that any overlap and interference with the activities of other committees in the industrial electronics society and other IEEE societies with similar mandate had to be avoided. It was decided to continue the discussions after the conference, come up with a mission statement for the committee, define the structure, launch a website and start thinking about the first future activity of the new-born committee after it is approved.

The panel session video recording is available here.
